($20) Deep violet. Lush, open-knit aromas of dark berries, chocolate and bourbon (American oak was used here). Rich-verging-on-fat, with a sweetness to the blackberry and cherry flavors and supple tannins. This is ready to drink and should give considerable pleasure to fans of round, fruit-driven shiraz. 88 points

Aromas are of black fruit and bread flour. On the palate, the alcohol is a little noticeable, but the plum and oak flavors are harmonious and tasty. A nice value. — D.T. (11/15/2004)

Tyrrell’s Willunga vineyard is nestled in the heart of the famous McLaren Vale region and features a block of 35 year old Shiraz vines that consistently produce outstanding fruit for the Reserve range.

VINTAGE
Vintage 2001 was preceded by excellent winter rainfall levels that fuelled spring growth, followed by warm and perfect conditions for fl owering in November that resulted in a good fruit set for all varieties. January and February were then exceptionally hot with 29 days over 30°C causing complete physiological ripening which encapsulated the fruit fl avours and brought harvest date forward. Canopy management was crucial with a ‘ballerina’ method being employed which involves holding up part of the canopy by wires and letting two thirds of it fall down over the fruit to allow more dappled sunlight into the canopy.
This ensures a greater percentage of leaves receive sunlight for photosynthesis and are utilised in the ripening process.

WINEMAKER’S NOTES
Another excellent year in McLaren Vale, lower yields and extended periods of hot weather produced ripe concentrated fruit. Picked early on the 23rd Feb 2001 when it is normally picked mid March. Crushed onsite and then fermented in the Hunter Valley in a combination of both open vats and potter tanks with 30% of the wine fi nishing fermentation in barrels. Maturation was in both French and American, new and 1 and 2 year old oak barriques. After 15 months, the components were blended and made ready for bottling in December 2002.
Alcohol 14.0%, pH 3.56, Acid 6.55g/L.

TASTING NOTES
A great wine which is gaining a strong reputation as a full fl avoured style that encapsulates the wonderfully rich varietal characters of McLaren Vale Shiraz. There are fresh aromas of ripe berry fruits with a touch of spicy pepper and the sweet lift of vanillin oak on the bouquet. The palate has ripe fleshy fruit flavours, which are complexed by hints of chocolate and well integrated oak, with a distinctive finish. Favourable vintage conditions, partial barrel fermentation and 15 months maturation in small oak barriques prior to bottling, have helped give this wine soft velvety tannins, rich flavours and the structure to last.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS
This wine is excellent drinking now and will cellar for the medium term. Rich and full bodied, it will complement a wide array of equally robust and intense foods, such as roasts of lamb or beef, game dishes, casseroles and hard cheeses.
