Vineyard Notes
The Pillow Road vineyard is located in the Russian River Valley of West Sonoma County, southwest of the city of Sebastopol, in an area affectionately known as the Sebastopol Hills. Previously identified with Gravenstein apple orchards and counter culture lifestyles, it is now known as a premium viticultural region, renowned for producing world class Pinot Noir. Famous for its Goldridge soils, large temperature swings and sweeping morning fog, the vines at Pillow Road thrive in ideal climatic conditions that produce exceptional wines, capturing the best expression of this unique vineyard. The first plantings were in 2000 to Pinot Noir clones 777, 115 and 4, with more recent plantings of Calera and Swan. The different clones complement one another in the final blend, offering bright fruit tones with elegance, depth and structure.
 
Cellar Notes
The 2012 Pillow Road Pinot Noir was harvested during the night to preserve the fresh fruit characters of this delicate variety. The harvest period was unusually long this year, beginning on September 14th and ending on October 11th. The grapes are hand sorted and de-stemmed without crushing, then to small open top fermenters where they undergo a five day “cold soak” to extract maximum fruit character. The grapes then begin the fermentation process naturally, and are gently punched down by hand 2-4 times a day. Once proper extraction is complete, the wine is gently pressed and transferred to 40% new French Burgundy barrels and aged sur-lies for 12 months. Bottled on September 12, 2013.
