Winemaker's Notes
This wine is drawn from the original Cabernet Sauvignon blocks at Seven Hills Vineyard, planted by my father in 1980. This vintage marks the 27th year I have been making Cabernet Sauvignon from these same, precious old vines. 2014 was a very warm vintage, marked by severe heat during veraison, stunting berry growth and resulting in very small berries which produced a firm tannin structure to frame rich fruit density. This old vine Cabernet has a dark garnet gem color and a generous nose of black currant, cherry, spice, desert herb, and white pepper. The palate is plush and mouth-filling, yet framed with silky, fine-grained tannins and lifting acidity. It has flavors of black cherry, cassis, coffee bean, herb, tobacco leaf, and spice. This wine will improve significantly with cellaring over the first five years and will hold nicely and continue to develop for ten or more years from vintage. -Casey McClellan, Winemaker

This wine comes from this vineyard's original Cabernet blocks planted in 1980. Wound-up aromas of woodspice, herb, pencil lead and dark fruit are followed by concentrated but still supple black-fruit flavors. It's high up on the hedonistic scale, accentuated by a lengthy finish. Decant to let it open up.

The 2014 Seven Hills Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of sagebrush, creme de cassis, anise and black olive tapenade. The mouthfeel here is gorgeous, as the wine shows off flavors of creme de cassis, milk chocolate and black cherry compote. Lithe and delicious, this should cellar well for a decade or more. Deeply structured yet well-built, with crushed rock, currant and spice flavors that persist toward big but refined tannins. Best from 2019 through 2024. -TF

(made mostly from the oldest plantings at Seven Hills): Medium red-ruby. Cassis, black cherry and leafy notes of tobacco and fresh herbs. Wonderfully dense, suave, pure wine with excellent clarity and depth to its red and darker berry and spice flavors; a floral element provides lift. This fruity, balanced wine finishes with nicely buffered tannins and sneaky length. Much more pliant in the early going than the 2013 was last year. -Stephen Tanzer. Tasting date: June 2017

Like the Merlot, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Seven Hills Vineyard has a straight, classic style, and shines for its drinkability. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and with lots of tobacco leaf, earth and dark fruits, it should drink nicely through 2024.
