The deep herbal liqueur and walnut nose really pulls you into this massive and tannic red, which has enough sweet plums and prunes to carry all this. Enormous power at the very long finish. This could take on the richest red meat dish you can imagine with no trouble. Drink or hold.

The 2012 Scopone Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is seductive and inviting. It instantly delivers wonderful aromatics of ripe dark cherries, blackberries and raisins with secondary characteristics of spices, licorice and sweet toasty nuances all taking shape. This is richly textured, with plush tannins and a mouthful of ripe dark fruits, spices and toasted flavors that expand across the palate and linger on the finish. This sumptuous Brunello is drinking remarkably well right now.

Moderately saturated red. Pungent aromas of blackberry, faded flowers, licorice and minty cocoa. Juicy and floral in the mouth at first, but then turns extremely oaky and mouth-coating; not very harmonious, perhaps a bit youthfully imploded even, producing a clenched mouthfeel. Finishes long but astringent, with a slightly drying quality. Will this expand with more time in the bottle? Perhaps, but currently, I find it to be a little disappointing, especially in light of how successful Scopone's regular 2012 Brunello was. -Ian D'Agata. Tasting date: February 2018
