Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Cour des Papes
Wine Details
Region: Southern Rhone Valley - France
Classification: AOP Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Grape Varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre
Appellation and Terroir
La Cour des Papes refers to the castle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape which was the second home of the Avignon popes in the 14th century. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation of the Southern Rhone Valley. The Grandes Serres' adventure began in this village in 1977. We have our vineyard of 3ha there, and also our production site. Our Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines are the most emblematic of Grandes Serres' range.
Established in 1936, Chateauneuf-du-Pape was the first protected designation of origin (AOC) in France. The specifications are very strict: the yields are limited to 35h Uha, the grapes have to be hand picked and carefully selected. Our wines come from the most well-known terroirs: red clays, sands, limestones and the famous and rolled drift pebbles called "galets roules" which store the heat during the day and then give it back to the vines during the night.
Harvest and Vinification
Hand-picked grapes, partially destemmed. Long maceration with one daily pumping over. 1 to 3 rack and return during the fermentation. Ageing in tanks and oak barrels (30%) for 18 to 24 months.
Tasting Notes
Beautiful deep red color with bright reflections. The nose is complex with notes of red fruit, leather, liquorice and spices. On the palate, the attack is frank, full and creamy. The tannins are silky.
Food Matching and Serving Suggestions
Suggested Food: A perfect match for red meats and mature cheeses. Grilled rib of beef along to mashed potatoes with black truffle.
Drink Within: 1-15 years.
Serve: 16-18 degrees C

The 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Cour des Papes checks in as 70% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and the rest Syrah, destemmed and brought up mostly in stainless steel tanks. It's a big, full-bodied, chewy wine that's packed with fruit as well as classic notes of black cherries, blackberries, peppery spices and hints of tapenade. It's a delicious mouthful of a wine to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years.

Rhone craft winery, says the label (they are a large negociant). Green apple and apricot on the nose, decent concentration and sufficient freshness to give balance. Lots to like here, even if it isn't the most complex example. (RH)
