Basket Pressed Shiraz 2016
Description
Deep ruby color. Complex earthy notes combine with rich raspberry compote, aniseed, and charcuterie on the bouquet. Lingering in the background is a hint of smoky cedar. Dense, rich fruit flavors of raspberry, blackberry, and plum coat the palate initially before savory black olive leads into soft, fine-grained and lengthy tannins to finish. A full-flavored Shiraz.
Winemaker's Notes
The 2016 vintage growing season began with a dry and warm spring. Flowering conditions were quite good and berry set was reasonable. Mild but dry conditions continued into summer until January 29th, when we received 44 mm of rain. The rain freshened the canopies and fleshed out berry size. The final ripening period was cool and dry, allowing delicate flavors to develop slowly and produce full-flavored wines with moderate alcohol levels and lovely aromatic notes. The vineyard has a predominately eastern exposure. Soil varies from sandy loam at the top of the hill to heavier loam and clay as it transcends down the hill towards the creek. The dry climate forces the vine roots, ranging from 10-20 years, to delve into the complex underlying geology consisting of quartz and ironstone gravels, weathered and calcareous sandstone, siltstone and limestone. Fruit was harvested from February 17th to March 8th. It was immediately crushed, destemmed, and hand-plunged, utilizing open top fermentation. Following 9-12 days on skins, traditional basket pressing in our 1928 basket press was employed. The wine then matured in a combination of American, French, and Eastern European oak barrels for 13 months. We highly recommend decanting prior serving.

Excellent dark garnet-purple; a jumble of black cherries, dark chocolate, licorice root and cinnamon lead the way to the full-bodied palate. While there's a touch of drying wood-varnish on the finish, this is ultimately deep and luscious, with velvety tannins adding a glossy feel.

Big, ripe and generous, with vanilla-scented blackberry and blueberry flavors on a thick, velvety frame. Shows muscle, but stays balanced by perfumed notes of violet and lavender, lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2030. - MW

Rating: 91
As beefy and rich as a Black Angus steak, this is a bloody Shiraz, emphasizing smoky, umami tones and some green edges to the tannins, even as the texture is soft to the touch. It will benefit from aging a few years, then decant it for grilled, grass-fed beef. (02/20)

The lead aromatic of the Kay Brothers offerings, the 2016 Basket Pressed Shiraz is nevertheless a tasty glass of wine. It's full-bodied and flows with creamy boysenberry fruit across the mid-palate before firming up on the long finish, where it picks up a hint of chocolate.

From this historic winery's home block of vines, this Shiraz is a rich, winter warmer that's still finding its way. It opens with aromas of plump blueberries, plums, chocolate flakes, dried green spices and black pepper, with flecks of licorice and graphite in the background. There's some heat from the alcohol on the palate and the oak is fairly prominent. Spicy, drying tannins back more plush plummy fruit. This should cellar well, but it's a little chunky at the moment.
