Vintage
The 2016 vintage experienced the best of both worlds with a hot spring and early summer, but also a cool fall season. Cooler temperatures in August and September, slowed down ripening and resulted in longer hang time for the grapes and the longest harvest on record in Washington State (August 15-November 15). Overall, 2016 saw very favorable growing conditions, producing wines with ripeness and elegance.
Vineyards
Red Mountain is one of the warmest, driest regions in Washington, producing small berries with intense concentration. Vineyards for the blend consist of Heart of the Hill (Cabernet Sauvignon- 80%), Canyons Red Mountain (Cabernet Sauvignon- 18%), and Ranch at the End of the Road (Syrah- 2%).
Winemaking
Grapes were sorted with a state-of-the-art receiving and separation system that gently removes stems and leaves, allowing for more pure fruit expression. Daily gentle pumpovers during fermentation extract optimal flavor and color and minimize harsh tannins. Each fermentation lot is tasted daily to evaluate the evolution of the tannins, modify extraction techniques, and find the right moment to drain the wine off of its skins. Aging is in French and American oak (66% new) for 18 months.
Winemaker's Tasting Notes
"We are pleased to introduce our new Red Mountain Cabernet to showcase one of Washington's warmest and most renowned regions known for rich, concentrated red wines. We crafted this Red Mountain Cab to highlight the ripe fruit characteristics and intense aromatics and focused tannins reflective of this very hot and dry region. Our wine offers aromas and flavors of black cherry, cardamom spice, and dark chocolate with an elegant structure and refined tannins. We hope you enjoy this ultimate sense of place." -Bob Bertheau, Head Winemaker.

With 2% Syrah blended in, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain features classic black fruit aromas that are rich and lush, with notes of soft oak spices and purple flowers. Medium to full-bodied, the Cabernet is youthfully tight and rigid in the mouth, with grippy, structured tannins and a complex, mineral-driven tension, showing exceptional quality. The finish is dusty, with a composed yet tight complexity that will age beautifully over the next decade.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain (which includes 2% Syrah) sports a saturated purple color as well as a beautiful bouquet of black cherries, scorched earth, new leather, and ample gravelly minerality. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and beautifully textured on the palate, it's a balanced Red Mountain Cabernet that can be enjoyed any time over the coming 10-15 years.

Bright, saturated medium ruby. Very ripe, slightly porty aromas of kirsch, cassis, black plum, mocha and spices, plus suggestions of herbs and menthol. Plush, sweet and tactile; reveals plenty of Red Mountain ripeness and power but in a take-no-prisoners style. The wine's briary black and purple berry flavors are complicated by bitter chocolate, licorice and sassafras elements. Boasts much more stuffing than the Mimi Cabernet and finishes with chewy, ripe, building tannins and noteworthy persistence. Still, there's something a bit unrefined about this Cabernet. Aromas of green herb, coffee ground, black fruit and clove lead to dark fruit flavors backed by slightly gritty-seeming tannins. Chocolate notes linger on the finish. There are good things here, but they don't all seem in harmony at present, with the barrel influence showing prominently.
