Trimarchisa 2015
Overview
Tornatore wines are produced by one the oldest wine-growing families on Sicilys Mt. Etna, a one-of-a-kind volcanic region that is one of Italys most exciting appellations. Tornatore seamlessly melds generations of experience with modern techniques, nurturing the regions most premium vineyards on Mt. Etnas prized northern slopes and using the highest quality native grapes in the Etna denomination. Tornatore produces wines of brilliance and finesse, acclaimed for capturing the essence of Etnas terroir with a deft balance of concentrated flavors, complexity, refinement, and freshness.
About the Wine
Multifaceted soils helped the wine to full maturity, giving it a restrained ripeness mixed with minerality. The aromas and flavors blend blackberry, black cherry with those mineral notes and a delicate hint of wood. The complex, elegant mouthfeel balances with firm tannins and lively acidity to create a very long finish and a wine that has great potential for longevity.
About the Region:
Mt. Etna is mainland Europes largest and most active volcano and a superlative example of a volcanic wine region. Centuries of eruptions have created a complex mix of fertile, layered, and well-drained soils. Sicily benefits from ample sunshine and warmth, but Mt. Etnas high elevation also provides greater rainfall, moderating breezes, and cooler temperatures. Etnas unique nature means soils, microclimates, and exposures change dramatically from site to site, creating a panorama of characteristics and possibilities in the vineyards. Tornatores 114 acres of vineyards range across Etnas finest sites at elevations from 1,800 to nearly 2,300 feet on the most-prized northern slopes of Mt. Etna.
Viticulture Notes
The 2015 growing season required careful management in the vineyards. Our weather was cold and rainy early in the season and again at times near harvest. Periods of heat in summer also mixed with some rain. Our grapes matured somewhat later than average, which also allowed for flavors and complexity to develop. We harvested in mid-October, and the result was excellent quality and grapes that produced elegant wines with the typical characteristics of Etna.
Winemaking Notes
The grapes were hand-harvested in small crates and quickly brought to the winery where there were manually sorted. The grapes were destemmed and only partially crushed, then fermented 10-12 days in cone-shaped wooden vats at 72 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. During fermentation, they were manually punched down many times daily. After fermentation, the grapes were left to macerate a few days more, then the free run wine was separated from grape skins, which were pressed with the traditional vertical press. The wine aged in cement tanks and at least 12 months in large, 600-gallon wood barrels.

There is so much red berry fruit here such as redcurrants and raspberries as well as more ripe notes of ash, tar, dried rose petals and spices. The palate is quite rich and dense yet very much kept fresh by tangy fruit and pretty acidity. Long finish. Drink now.

Aromas of tobacco, menthol, coconut and a whiff of oak-driven spice lead the bouquet of this wine. The firm, focused palate boasts fine-grained tannins that lithely support flavors of dried black cherry, ripe raspberry, star anise and espresso. Drink 2020–2025.

Etna, Sicily
Red wine from Italy
Drinking window: 2022 - 2025
Good full ruby. High-pitched and tightly wound in the mouth, with juicy and pure floral red berry flavors. This clean, sneakily ripe wine offers more fruit and herbal notes on the clean, building, long finish. A blend of 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio planted in the Trimarchisa contrada in the Verzella zone sloping down to the Alcantara river on mostly lava-rich and calcareous soil. No small merit is that it hides its 14% alcohol well.
