The nose is a pure wild expression of Mencia, red forest fruit, blackberries, and raspberries with floral notes of violets. This is combined with hints of oak and offers a sweet taste of toffee caramel. On the palate, fresh entry and floral notes make this experience something unique and wonderful.

Tasting Notes: Anyone who has ever seen photographs of the steep slopes of Ribeira Sacra will wonder how it is possible to produce a wine like this in our Value category -- but here it is, dark, fresh and thrillingly aromatic from first sniff to last swallow. This limpid... wine is made from the Mencia grape variety (known as Jaen in Portugal) and the emphasis is on its sloe, bramble and damson fruits in all their primary glory, almost as if it had been run from the vats just a week or two earlier. The palate is soft-textured, mouth-filling, exuberant and comely, structured more prominently by acidity than tannin, though that acidity is sweet and juicy in its own right. There is nothing at all sharp or hard about this tender, almost lip-smacking red ... yet the variety itself, and the legacy of its austere, granite-soiled origins, somehow contrive to stop the wine tasting simple.

This fresh and vibrant Mencia opens to aromas of black raspberries, red plums, crushed flowers, spices and pepper all taking shape. The palate is medium-bodied, with a lovely fine texture that displays beautiful focus. Flavors of black raspberries, dark plums and violet notes continue to build through the long, juicy finish. Overall, this is a fantastic wine which will be accessible upon release and will also cellar nicely over the next decade.

Rectoral de Amandi 2020 Ribeira Sacra Matilda Nieves Mencia
Rating: 91
This is a fresh and bright, raw-grape beauty. It's all primary pleasure, pungent, in-your-face blackberry fruit, simple and friendly. "The blood of the earth, in a good way," one panelist said. A summery cookout red. (08/21)

Bodegas Rectoral de Amandi was founded in 1989 in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra, in the region called Amandi. They work with 180 ha of private vineyards and about 400 local vine growers. Vines planted in the traditional way on terraces on very steep hills, up to 500 m above sea level, and some vineyards have slopes around 40%. All grapes are necessarily hand-picked. [...] Macerated and spontaneously fermented at 25 degrees C for 15–20 days in stainless steel.
Take a 7B pencil (dark, graphite, coal dust soft); trace a dark-red rose petal on tissue paper; fold the paper into an envelope; tuck the pencil inside it; fill it with black cherries, three cloves, a pinch of caraway seeds, a sprig of rosemary. Sprinkle in some menthol-sherbet space dust. Drop in a fairy-sized firework. Close the envelope, crush elderberries between your finger tips, finger-print the envelope with the purple-black juice. Deliver it in a wine glass. [...] impishly delicious, outrageously fresh yet black-velvet sumptuous, doo-wop fun yet pretty complex, super-juicy wine [...] (TC)
