By Champagne Philippe Fourrier
Cuvee Millesime Brut 2014
History and Terroir
This venerable six-generation Cote des Bar-based family has been growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier since 1847 and has practiced sustainable viticulture for several decades. Their chalky limestone and marl vineyards extend throughout the six communes of the Cote des Bar in the beautiful Aube valley. Some of the parcels in this excellent 2014 vintage are already over 50 years old and would qualify as 'old vines. The majority comes from an ideally exposed single vineyard of Pinot Noir called la Grande Cote, facing fully to the south. Philippe is president of the local growers' syndicate and works alongside his son Julien, now in charge of winemaking, and his two daughters, Stephanie and Mathilde.
Vintage and Harvest
This is a beautifully constructed 2014, rising to the climatic challenges of a difficult stormy summer season for growers, despite record amounts of sunshine. The 100% old vines Pinot Noir grapes used here were rigorously hand-sorted, and after vinification, the wine was aged before being disgorged. Temperature-controlled stainless steel vinification.
Tasting Notes
The effervescence is fine and persistent, and the bubbles are small. The fruit-driven aromatics show hints of mango, chamomile, cherry, and apricots, and these notes are beautifully echoed on the well-rounded medium-bodied nutty, biscuity, and fresh, savory palate. The length is intense and complex, showing marzipan, raspberry, and a ready-to-drink overall liveliness.
Enjoyment
This gently textured Champagne is ideal as a refreshing aperitif or for a special celebration. Pair with grilled lobster, scallops, crab, and sushi. Also, try with full-bodied cheeses and roast chicken.
