Vintage Details
After a cold and dry winter, spring brought very warm and sunny conditions. Budburst appeared in late March and progressed quickly, allowing us to start removal of the unwanted new shoots in mid-April. The early and homogenous flowering was over in late May, approximately two weeks earlier than 2010. On June 4th, a violent hail storm hit some extremely high-quality plots located around the Chateau, followed by exceptional sunshine during June. A deliberately late, precise, and localized de-leafing prevented scalds from happening in late June. Cool and rainy weather arrived during the green harvest in July and allowed the vines to regenerate and start a quick and consistent veraison under close supervision. In anticipation of the harvest, we started tasting the berries in late August, earlier than normal.

Rating: 94 - Cellar Selection
Winery: Chateau Rauzan-Segla
Region: Bordeaux
Variety: Bordeaux-style Red Blend
Wine Type: Red
Issue Date: 2/1/2014
This is typical of the ripe and opulent style of this property with superripe black currant fruit. It's concentrated in flavor, but also structured with smooth tannins. It's a wine both for short-term fruitiness and long-term power and density. [...].

Silky and well balanced, it stands out for its quality. One of the few to have the tannic hold that actually embraces the fruit with touches of grilled almond and cassis bud. This is pretty serious but there is concentration and plenty of potential ahead of it. [...].

From: The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)
The 2011 Rauzan-Segla has a ripe, flesh, red plum, hoisin and sandalwood-scented bouquet, quite showy and forward, willing to give sensory pleasure now, not tomorrow. The palate is beautifully balanced, fresh and saline with fine grain tannins. Linear, but there is tension here that is missing in some of the other 2011 Margaux wines. Persistent on the finish - this is excellent. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2011 Rauzan-Segla is more red-fruited and spice-driven, with complex tobacco, dried earth, flowers, and cedar notes in the background. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has the firm edge to its tannins that’s common in the vintage, yet it has more than enough sweet fruit as well as impressive mid-palate depth and a great finish. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, it’s another rich yet elegant wine from this estate that will continue offering ample pleasure for another two decades or more.

Deep garnet colored, the 2011 Rauzan-Segla displays a series of earthy notes to begin - truffles, moss-covered bark, fungi and tilled soil - over a core of redcurrant jelly, blackberry pie and mincemeat with hints of sandalwood, new leather and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied with a firm line of chewy, slightly rustic tannins, it has a great core of earth-laced black fruits with provocative freshness and a long mineral-tinged finish.

Lush and frankly ripe, with alluring plum sauce, fig paste and currant confiture flavors, layered with dark cocoa and black tea notes. The long, velvety finish has some serious latent grip. An impressive effort for the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2028.
2011 Chateau Rauzan-Segla (Margaux)
Points: 92
This would be a nice wine in any vintage, but it's a true accomplishment in 2011. Truffle, earth, plums, black cherry and spice aromas come to the surface with ease. The fruit is bright, with good freshness and balance, finishing with sweet, ripe berries. [...].

Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Slightly one-dimensional nose. Solid, rather impenetrable. Chunky. Not that gracious. Just a bit monolithic. But lots of life there.
