Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2018
Grapes
Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Winemaker
Chateau Teyssier is one of the largest selling Saint Emilion Grand Crus. The wine is made to high standards using the same equipment and methods for our top-end single-vineyard wines. We hope our clients see this as a real 'Sunday Claret' - but every Sunday!
Viticulture
The wine is a combination of several parcels based in southwest Saint Emilion that have been accumulated since 1994. This terroir, composed of mainly sandy gravelly soils, helps produce the wine's approachability. The bulk of the vineyard is near Chateau Monbousquet.
Vinification
The vines are pruned on the double guyot system. The secondary shoots are removed, and green harvesting is completed to achieve a low crop. The grapes are handpicked into small trays before transferring to the winery. The grapes are sorted, first by the bunch, and after destemming, grape by grape. Only conveyors transport the grapes, and the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks after cold maceration. The wines are aged in French oak, a quarter of which is new.

Currant, dried-flower, citrus-zest and sandalwood aromas, with hints of sliced mushrooms. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins and fresh acidity. Fragrant, pretty and precise. Really fine. Try from 2024.

What can be thought of as the entry-level cuvee from Teyssier, the 2018 Chateau Teyssier is a sleeper in the vintage, offering a great perfume of blueberries, wildflowers, candied orange, and Asian spices, with a touch of chalky minerality on the finish. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured on the palate, it's a gorgeous, already impossible to resist Saint-Emilion to enjoy over the coming decade. It's the finest vintage I've tasted for this release.

Big and rich, this balanced and accessible wine is generous both with its black fruits and smooth texture. The density and core of tannins do not detract from the full, fruity character. The wine will develop quickly. Drink from 2023.

The 2018 Teyssier is composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it comes skipping out of the glass with bright, open, carefree scents of stewed red and black plums, Morello cherries and fruitcake, plus hints of Chinese five spice, bay leaves and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is coated with spicy red and black fruit, supported by chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.

Flowers, licorice, tobacco and sweet cherries are on the nose and palate, where you also find a dash of chocolate in the finish. Soft and silky, this will drink well on release and for at least 12-15 more years. The wine was produced from blending [...] Merlot and [...] Cabernet Franc.

The 2018 Teyssier is a terrific and accessible Saint-Emilion from Jonathan Maltus. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, new oak, chocolate and floral notes flesh out in an attractive, supple 2018 that will drink well right out of the gate. The radiance of the year comes through nicely, with all of the elements deftly balanced.

Good bang for your buck at this price level, with its big, rich, juicy and concentrated fruit, although I can detect a trace of heat. 25% malo in [...] oak. The yield was around 30hl/ha in 2018, not unusual here.
