Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge Trilogies
The Story
The three grape varieties and three terroirs from which it comes make a truly balanced wine. It represents the diversity and richness of Chateauneuf du Pape.
Wine Details
Grapes: 80% Grenache Noir, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre
Terroir: Red clay with large pebbles, sandstone, and sandy terraces
Vine Age: 40 to 80 years old
Area: 9.50 ha
Viticulture
Organic farming. Gobelet and Cordon de Royat (for the Syrah) pruning. Plowing, natural grass cover every other row, leaf thinning, and sheep compost for soil life.
Winemaking
Hand harvest. Selective picking of grapes. De-stemming, indigenous yeasts. Maceration for three weeks to one month. Treading and pumping over. Matured 12 to 15 months in concrete tanks and 600-liter French oak barrels.
Tasting
Intense ruby color. Pleasing nose of red fruit, licorice, and spearmint notes. Crisp aroma of black fruit evolves to notes of truffle and scrubland. It's a rich and complete wine with refined tannins, supported by a long finish.
Service
Food Pairing: Lamb shoulder with herbs, tournedos Rossini, capon, beef bourguignon
Aging Capacity: 10 years and over

Rounded, plush, fresh and velvety with good acid balance. Seriously vibrant, electric on the palate with plum and violet flavours alongside very fine tannins, a patina on the lips. A very impressive wine from Fontavin. 40 to 80-year-old vines, grown organically.

The 2019 Domaine Fontavin Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Trilogies' begins with aromas of cherries and raspberries followed by garrigue, licorice, white pepper, light spices and stony minerals all taking shape. On the palate this medium-bodied red is elegant and silky, with wonderful finesse. Beautifully balanced with a lovely core of sweet red fruit that expands seamlessly on to the finish. This is a refined, classic expression that is showing excellent now, but allow this just a few more years and it will become even more compelling.

Cask sample. Tasted blind. An elegant nose, crushed blackberry and sweet fruit. A lactic creamy mouthfeel and subtle floral touch. Coming together and needs time but has a nice inviting character. (AC)
