The estate originally was a sumptuous palace in the Saint-Emilion village. The 2019 Chateau Palais Cardinal delivers lovely aromas of currants and ripe dark cherries woven together with florals, tobacco, chocolate licorice and spices all merging together. On the palate this is medium-bodied and nicely textured with notable depth. The finish is long and polished, marked by dark berries, spices and tobacco nuances.

A young, structured wine dominated by Merlot, this is one of a pair of second wines of Palais Cardinal. Juicy with light tannins, it is full of fruit and likely to age relatively quickly. Drink from 2025.

The 2019 La Reserve from Palais Cardinal is done in a pretty overt style, with plenty of dark fruit, torrefaction, leather, French oak and espresso flavors. Drink this extroverted Saint-Emilion over the next handful of years.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 La Reserve has a soft-spoken, savory nose of black olives, Marmite toast and dried Provence herbs over a core of warm black and red plums and mulberries plus a touch of cedar chest. The medium-bodied palate has a good core of lively black fruit preserves and lots of savory sparks, framed by plush tannins and finishing with an herbal lift.

I found both of the 2019s from Palais Cardinal to be disappointing. The 2019 Chateau Palais Cardinal La Reserve has a solid bouquet of spicy red and black fruits as well as cedarwood, but it's medium-bodied, mid-weight, and lean on the palate.
