Leaving the medieval walled city of Montalcino through the western Porta al Cassero, a winding road plunges steeply down, then branches back up to reveal Podere Canneta's nearby high-altitude vineyards. Cooler, near-perfect growing conditions there in 2016 encouraged slow-ripening Sangiovese to conjure complex aromatic compounds that complement the black cherry notes, silky tannins, and bright acidity on the palate. A majestic Brunello from a brilliant vintage with great reviews should, by all rights, cost much more than $30, but today is your lucky day!

Full-bodied and full-flavored Brunello with black-plum, black-fruit and some mild fresh-licorice character. Silky palate and a fresh finish. This is well-poised and attractive now, but give it a little more time. Best from 2022.

Deep ruby with orange tinges. Broad cherry and cherry-liqueur nose with notes of tobacco leaf and already developed. Supple cherry fruit that lacks a little in youthful vigour. Ready now and with little further potential. (WS)
