2019 Santenay Premier Cru La Maladiere

Appellation and Terroir
Santenay, lying at the southern extremity of the Cote de Beaune, is home to both the nymph of water and the god of wine. It is both a spa and a winegrowing center. The Santenay AOC status was instituted in 1937. Greyish limestones occupy the high ground up to a height of 500 meters. Starting at the 300-meter line, lower down the slope, are oolitic limestones, white oolite, marls, kidney-shaped limestones, and lower oolite on a marl layer. The location of the vineyards is ideal, with exposures between east and south.

Tasting Notes
A dark but brilliant black cherry. The bouquet evokes rose petals, peony, violet, red fruits, and a hint of licorice. In the mouth, the attack is deep and intense. Firm but discreet tannins make for a supple, fine-textured, well-built body. It boasts back aromas (often of bilberry) and a long finish.

Food Pairings
Its supple and intense attack and aromatic register with distinguished finish mean it should be paired with slow-cooked dishes like braised veal or beef, whose tannins will lend structure without being aggressive. Glazed or caramelized poultry in the Asian style would also give a warm welcome for its meaty texture, as would homemade hamburgers.

Perfumed and richly concentrated, this full-bodied Pinot Noir offers bold blackberry and black-plum flavors accented by hints of sweet tobacco and peppery spice. While tannins are fine and supple, the wine is a bit rigid in youth and could benefit from a bit more time. Cellar till 2024. It should drink well through 2029 at least.

[...] Smells of ripe plums and big early-autumn leaves - the kind you can go crashing through before winter has sat her wet, soggy bottom on them. But I'm not finding the ripeness on the palate. There is good fruit (although it took its queen-of-sheba time to show up) and the wine visibly (metaphorically speaking) relaxed with food. But it still has a slightly waspish finish and there is a sort of snippy, bossy didact element to the wine's character, as if it wants you to hurry along, stop loitering, there's chores to be done. Maybe it needs a bit of time to chill out. (TC)
