2019 Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon
Source
The Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon is the pinnacle of our blending efforts each year. The exalted Sacrashe Vineyard takes center stage and is the basis of this blend. The vineyard contributes mouth-coating richness and complexity, offering deep, dark, earthy cassis flavors and powerfully dense tannins. From there, we seek complementary vineyards, usually from the most regarded mountain appellations, to create balance, symmetry, and finesse in the wine. Lastly, we introduce vineyards with profound depth and decadence to heighten the voluptuousness and opulence that have become a hallmark of our flagship wine.
Vintage Details
The season started with an unseasonably warm, dry winter. At the end of March, cold, rainy weather arrived, and the mild spring gave the vines a strong, early start. Even with above-normal temperatures throughout the summer and fall, we still experienced the marine influence that defines the limiting conditions of our premium sites - cool morning fog and afternoon wind. This vintage produced great wines that are fresh, focused, and beautifully balanced.
Tasting Notes
Inky garnet in color. Open, effusive nose with freshly turned earth, dark spice, chocolate, ripe dark blackberry, and graphite. Supple on the entry, lush, broad, opulent, full of mid-palate fruit and sleek tannins, lengthy. An exceptional vintage of Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is a blend [...] brought up mostly in new barrels. It’s a killer bottle of wine offering lots of ripe black fruits intermixed with savory herbs, melted chocolate, and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the lush, round, velvety style of the 2019 vintage and is already impossible to resist. It’s going to evolve for 15+ years if well stored.

Rich and fleshy in feel, but with a nice juicy edge for balance, this lets creamed plum and blackberry fruit spill forth, laced liberally with mocha, singed alder, sweet tobacco and melted black licorice. For the hedonist crowd. Drink now through 2035.

Largely from the Sacrashe Vineyard in Rutherford, which the Halls planted in 1995. [...] its a basket of strawberry, plum and chocolate-covered raspberries on the nose while the palate is enveloped in robes of dark berry fruit, cedar oak, liquorice and wet slate. Rich earth notes underscore plush tannins that glide to a long finish of wild herbs dusted with cocoa powder.

[...] the flagship 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall, based largely on fruit from the Sacrashe Vineyard, at the eastern edge of the Rutherford AVA. [...], aged in 75% new barrels (mainly Taransaud), it's cedary on the nose, with plenty of cassis and black cherries in support. Full-bodied and plush, this well-endowed effort finishes long and softly dusty, with just a touch of alcoholic warmth.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is bright and nicely focused, with fine energy and tons of class. In 2019, Kathryn Hall is effusive and soaring in its aromatics, distinctly red-toned in its fruit profile and less heavy than the 2018 in this tasting. Does this signal a new era for Hall?
