Tasting Notes
The typicity of our Estate Vineyard terroir shines through in this vintage - dark ruby red, which opens with pretty, ripe cherries and plums that meld seamlessly with underlying wild herbs, dried flowers, spice, and black tea notes. Layers of sweet, dark cherries dance across the palate, while acidity is seamlessly integrated and balances nicely with the expansive, bright texture. Medium-long finish with structured tannins. We suggest decanting this vintage in its youth. Drink now and over the next 10+ years.
Vintage
Not only was 2021 a year that would leave an indelible imprint on all our lives - setting the second year of the pandemic aside, Mother Nature presented a wonderful vintage. The resulting quantity of Pinot Noir from our Estate Vineyard was low, with yields averaging less than two tons/acre, yet we are very pleased with the quality of this limited wine. We take great pride in our practices, which have demonstrated continued improvement in the health of our Estate Vineyard and the resulting expression of its unique terroir. Following a warm and uneventful summer, ideal for minimal disease pressure, our Pinot Noir blocks ripened gradually, and we harvested each at optimal taste and parameters around acids, lignification, and seed maturity. The ensuing wines are beautiful expressions of Pinot Noir with pretty, ripe, dark fruit aromas, lively acidity, and roundness on the palate. Cluster and berries were normal in size.
Vinification
Fermentation management included 4-7 day cold soaks, spontaneous native yeast ferments, twice-a-day pump-overs, and gentle cap-only punch-downs. Lastly, the final blend has roughly 5% whole cluster and is comprised of mostly free-run barrels following racking off the lees.

Resting for 18 months in 100% French Oak barrels, [...], the 2021 Family estate Pinot Noir from Lachini sports a shimmering medium ruby-blue core with a neon pink rim in the glass. Red and black cherries start things off on the nose as the wine moves to notes of cedary herbs, red licorice, crushed roses, and shades of espresso and grilled meat on the palate. Tannins are integrated and smooth, acidity is medium plus, and it finishes with a black plum and black pepper note.

Redcurrants, sandalwood, a talc-like mineral note and a wisp of wild prairie roses place you right in a meadow. After the aromatic show, flavors of black cherries, shredded coconut, dark chocolate and balsa fill the mouth. Silky tannins with restrained acidity.

Lachini Vineyards 2021 Pinot Noir - Lachini Family Estate Red 750 ml
Score: 89
Tasted: Apr 10, 2024
Drink: 2028+
Issue: 94
Note: Chehalem Mountains, SRP $75, 13.90%
Tasting Note: An intriguing nose is comprised primarily of red currants, dark raspberry, rose petal and a whiff of spice. The refined and decidedly fleshy middle weight flavors possess good volume before concluding in a dusty and lingering finish that is also borderline raspy. This should also benefit from a few years of keeping that should help to round off the mild finishing edginess and my rating assumes that will progressively occur.

Color: Red
Grape/Blend: Pinot Noir
Rating: 89
Drinking Window: 2024 - 2027
From: Sitting Pretty: Oregon's New Release Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Beyond (Jan 2024)
The 2021 Pinot Noir Family Estate opens with a burst of dusty florals giving way to delicate hints of cinnamon and dried strawberry. It's round in feel with cooling acidity and ripe red and blue fruits, yet I find myself craving more depth. Grippy with an acidity derived tension, this finishes with medium length and a hard candy sensation.
