History
With his international background and growing reputation in Bordeaux, it made sense that Jonathan Maltus would take his wine ventures beyond France. The Napa adventure kicked off in 2008 with the clear goal of defying convention by bringing a French winemaking slant to the New World. It began as a collaboration, but in 2017, Jonathan wanted to get much more hands-on and take complete control over the winemaking to step up quality and precision. By sourcing fruit from only the finest growing partners - principally from the most exclusive vineyards around To-Kalon in Oakville - World's End wines are now beating out their rhythm louder and harder than ever before.

The Team
World's End might be Jonathan's vision, but the wines are unquestionably a team effort. Neil Whyte has been Jonathan's right-hand man in Bordeaux, Australia, and USA for more than 25 years. The duo regularly hop between Bordeaux and Napa to taste the wines, make important winemaking decisions about barrels and blends, meet up with man-on-the-ground Adam Braunstein, and enjoy a bit of Californian sun while they're at it.

Production
Not everything that nature provides is worth keeping. Strict and stringent sorting - first by bunch and then, after de-stemming, grape by grape - leaves us with only the best fruit. Then, vinification is very similar to what we do on the other side of the Atlantic. Everything's done gently to lock in the terroir's potential and extract rich color and structure before the wines go into fine French oak for malolactic fermentation and aging. It's no secret that the Californian sun contributes to the signature style of our reds with their Cabernet-Sauvignon-forward ripe black fruit aromas and beautiful, velvety tannins. And yet, it's our French winemaking heritage that ensures their fine balance and remarkable persistence.

Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Good Times, Bad Times Beckstoffer To Kalon opens with fragrant sandalwood, potpourri, Chinese five spice and chargrilled meat scents over a core of blackcurrant pastilles, Morello cherries and baked plums plus suggestions of unsmoked tobacco, milk chocolate and cedar chest. Full-bodied, concentrated and laden with generous black fruit and spicy layers, it has a firm, plush frame and a long, perfumed finish.

A bold and well structured Cabernet that’s built on a huge scale. Yet, it remains bright, rather than tipping over into overripeness. Not just a slew of ripe plums, but also savory and terracotta notes. The generous finish is still quite tannic. Better from 2020.
