2022 Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard Sonoma Coast
The Vineyard
This vineyard is situated on Roberts Road at the western base of Sonoma Mountain. We source fruit from five distinct blocks. The core clone 115 block was originally planted in 1998 on 101-14 rootstock in an old creek bed, and forms the base of this wine each vintage. Portions of Swan and Mt. Eden clones are blended to add complexity and structural nuances. Climate is key to this vineyard's ability to produce noteworthy Pinot Noir. Cool ocean breezes and Petaluma Gap fog keep the heat in check and allow a long hang time while retaining natural acidity.
Winemaker Notes
A warm 2022 summer brought one of the earliest harvests on record in the Sonoma Coast, with a September heat wave influencing picking decisions. Cooler pockets of the Sonoma Coast fared well through the heat, and the resulting wines offer depth and finesse. Yields were minuscule, with many vineyards breaking records on the low side for cluster weights. The resulting wines have concentrated flavors with tension and length. Our 2022 Sangiacomo Vineyard Pinot Noir has a foundation of Mt. Eden and 115 clones. Swan clone was also blended in, adding rich fruit and silky texture. Each clone was fermented and aged separately in 50% French oak barrels. The resulting wine offers alluring red fruit aromas with hints of forest floor.

All destemmed fruit was used in the 2022 Sangiacomo Vineyard Pinot Noir from Sojourn. Seeing 50% new French oak during aging, it sports a glistening medium ruby-garnet core with a bluish rim in the glass. A touch more meaty and earthy than its siblings - think notes of crushed pink peppercorn and a touch of peppered charcuterie. Bold blue and red fruited notes meld with violet flowers and black tea notes that sit on the mid-palate. [...]. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

This Pinot sports a savory nose of dried cranberry, forest floor and shiitake mushroom. That energy carries right through to the palate, where the flavors of succulent black cherry and the snap of well-balanced tannin sit in a medium-bodied framework with just the right amount of oak.

Coming from the western base of Sonoma Mountain on Roberts Road, the 2022 Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard shows the sunny side of this warm and early vintage, with fruity aromas of preserved mixed berries, candied flowers, and sweet herbs. Ripe and medium-bodied, it has a silky, supple texture, a light, coating feel, and a more modest, earth-noted finish. It is going to offer more immediate appeal, so drink it over the next few years. Shows maturity already, offering mulled cherry and raspberry fruit that glides through gently, with light tea and savory notes. The silky finish is a touch shy on energy but lingers prettily. Drink now through 2026. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
